In the latest blow to establishment Democrats, Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley defeated Rep. Michael Capuano for the nomination in Massachusetts’ 7th District.
Pressley will become the first black woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress, after serving as the first black woman to serve on the city council. Capuano was a 10-term incumbent, representing a district covering an area stretching southwest from Boston. Capuano conceded Tuesday evening.
The race was compared to the Democratic primary in New York’s Fourteenth District, which also featured a woman of color, endorsed by the Justice Democrats, running against an older, white, male incumbent. But there were clear differences. New Yorker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was a first-time candidate while Pressley has served on the City Council since her election in 2009. Although she was endorsed by progressive groups, Pressley, who has worked for Sen. John Kerry and supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, is not as far left as Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic Socialists of America member who organized for Bernie Sanders. The two women met at a fund-raising event in New York in June, and Pressley referred to Ocasio-Cortez as her “sister in change.”
Another difference is that while New York Rep. Joe Crowley didn’t take Ocasio-Cortez’s candidacy seriously and skipped debates with her, Capuano recognized the threat from Pressley from the start. Last month the congressman talked to Yahoo News after a full day of campaigning in the district and said that he had canceled an annual January vacation to focus on Pressley’s challenge. The two candidates debated several times in August.

Capuano picked up a number of key endorsements, including the other six Massachusetts House members, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Rep. John Lewis, the civil rights icon. But Pressley chipped away at his lead, holding Capuano to a draw in the competition for endorsements from Massachusetts’ two powerful senators, Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, who stayed neutral. Then more endorsements fell her way, including state attorney general Maura Healey and both of Boston’s daily papers, the Boston Globe and Boston Herald.
“Voters might be hesitant to move on from Capuano after his years of experience and the seniority he has accumulated in Congress,” wrote the Globe editorial. “But Pressley is a proven advocate with an understanding of the needs of the district, and she would be a fresh voice in Congress. Pressley represents the present of the Seventh District and the future of the Democratic Party. She will serve the district well in Congress.”
The result of this race isn’t likely to change many votes in Congress — Capuano’s record checked nearly every box for a progressive Democrat — but it does change representation. Pressley’s campaign emphasized her ethnic identification with the district and focused on inequality within the district, as she emphasized in video released early last month.
Pressley said that Ocasio-Cortez’s victory in June was a boost for her campaign, getting some skeptics off the fence and further emboldening those who were already supporting her. She said the network of insurgent, progressive candidates being supported by groups like the Justice Democrats had been inspiring.

“I think it’s a return to the roots for the party,” said Pressley in an interview last month, “and it’s necessary for us to not only confront and resist what is coming out of this White House every day but to progress, not only in our communities but to advance our democracy.”

Pressley is a heavy favorite in November in one of the most Democratic districts in the country.

Actress Jen Ponton shares why fat women are more than just 'the funny sidekick'

Jen Ponton is famous for playing Rubi, the feminist fat activist on AMC’s new show Dietland, and from spots on 30 Rock, Orange Is the New Black, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. However, one of Ponton’s early and cringe-y roles was SpongeBob Squarepants.

“When I was 22, I worked as a mascot for kids’ birthday parties,” Ponton tells Yahoo Lifestyle about her humble beginnings. “I wore a hot polyester suit and a big foam head, and I made balloon animals. That was rough.”

A native of the Lehigh Valley in New Jersey, she always wanted to act, but her parents were less than thrilled with her unstable career trajectory. However, growing up as an only child and a self-described outcast, Ponton craved intimacy and connection on a grander scale, and performing — in school plays or by emceeing family gatherings — become her “light in the darkness.”

“I always had trouble making friends at school and camp and always felt ‘other,’” says Ponton, who will join other plus-size celebrities at theCURVYcon 2018, which you’ll be able to watch live on Yahoo Lifestyle. “I was an adult from a young age, and no one knew what to do with me.”

Ponton was bullied at school for her weight and she began a disordered relationship with food and exercise, bingeing or barely eating. “I was a latchkey kid, so I’d rip through cabinets and eat as much as I could,” she says. “At one point, I became a vegan, but for the wrong reasons, and did high-intensity workouts two to three times per day to the point where I couldn’t walk. I was destroying my body.”

“I don’t come from a fat family, so my parents were distressed and hid food because they were worried,” she says. “It was the ’90s, so our house was filled with fat-free Snackwell cookies and diet soda. I even joined my mom’s aerobics class three times a week, as the only child in the class.”

But when Ponton graduated college and discovered the internet’s the Fatosphere, a collection of blogs written by plus-size writers, she began feeling comfortable with her body. “I found amazing role models like Kate Harding, Marianne Kirby, and Lindy West, and because of them, I started blogging,” she says. “I’d come home, take off my mascot head, and read their work for hours. It reprogrammed me on a cellular level — I was able to subvert societal messages by listening to the right whispers at the right time.”

Ponton also resolved to avoid stereotypical roles given to plus-size women — a seriously ballsy move for a young, aspiring Hollywood actress. “Fat women are typically cast for funny sidekicks or sad sacks,” she says. “Comedy is how I cope with life, and it’s an important part of storytelling, but when ‘funny’ is only assigned to fat people, it’s problematic.”

As Ponton challenged the types of roles she was offered, she got more diverse parts: a Carvel ice cream employee on 30 Rock and a student in Boardwalk Empire, neither of which was relevant to her size.

In 2016, she starred in the indie comedy Love on the Run, playing Frannie, a dog groomer who is taken hostage by a handsome bank robber. The gig was important, because Ponton not only played a lead romantic role that wasn’t size-specific but also shot her first sex scene, a rare opportunity for a size-22 woman.

“It was difficult because there was no lead-up to the intimacy — I just dropped my towel and got on top of my co-star [Steve Howey] wearing pasties and nude underwear,” says Ponton. “But I got through it because I knew it would help women to see it. The experience also made me less inhibited and pushed me to be more vocal, fearless, and seen.”

Ponton also credits Instagram for sustaining the body-positive momentum. “The advent of Instagram is the whole reason the body-positive movement picked up steam. Plus-size women make up 67 percent of the population, but no one in power has presumed we are worthy.”

The actress contributes by Instagramming empowering full-body portraits, goofy childhood photos, and pics of Andrew, her husband of seven years, whom she met in college during a time she called a “peace treaty” with her body.

“He encourages me to embrace the word as an adjective, not an insult,” she says. “He also knows the best places to shop.” For Ponton, that matters. “Plus-size clothing is unrealistic when it comes to proportion, assuming that because a woman has a larger butt, she also needs a longer hemline,” she says, adding that her favorite style is a bralette, a crop top, and a high-waisted flowy skirt.

Ponton is hopeful that with shows like Dietland and events such as theCURVYcon 2018, an NYC-based star-studded networking event for bloggers and influencers Sept. 6-8 (Ponton and her Dietland co-star Joy Nash are speakers), larger characters will become more visible for the right reasons. “We’re taking baby steps, but I do think we’ll get to a place in which size isn’t the issue.”

Behold: Justin Bieber's New Ponytail

Despite the lob's omnipresence, though, barely any credit has been given to its surprising celebrity patient zero: Justin Bieber, who served up a casual reminder of influence over the weekend by stepping out in Beverly Hills with his fiancée, Hailey Baldwin, and taking his own lob to the next level: tying it back into a simple ponytail.

Bieber and Baldwin, who just dropped $5 million on a farmhouse in Canada, have made a surprising amount of hair-related headlines this summer. Back in July, Baldwin successfully coaxed Bieber into shaving off his mustache, and was also rumored to be the one to also convince him to get a bob earlier this month, judging by his recent declaration that he wants to grow his hair down to his toes. Their outing on Sunday, however, provided proof that Bieber in fact predated everyone from Kim Kardashian to Rihanna to Margot Robbie to Jessica Chastain in getting the haircut of the summer. (He just did so very quietly, thanks to an apparent lack of shampoo.)

Let's be honest: Bieber's hair was a mess before. Now that it's in a proper post-hair salon state, though, it can be fully be appreciated for what it truly is—something that even Baldwin aspires to. While they opted for quite different ensembles while out on their stroll—a bright blue Hawaiian shirt and a pair of checkered Vans slip-ons for Bieber; and an acid-washed Canadian tuxedo with a simple white tee for Baldwin—Bieber and Baldwin took the same approach to their beauty for the day, accessorizing with simple earrings and slicking back their blonde lobs into a pair of petite ponytails-slash-buns.

Some of the most surprising instances of celebrity body shaming, from Gal Gadot to Jennifer Aniston

Body shaming has reached every corner of the web, from teens to activists to pregnant women. It’s easier said than done, but it’s important to remember that harsh words from haters are truly meaningless in the face of your own self-esteem. One thing that may help? The fact that A-listers — the celebrities we’ve sometimes literally voted the sexiest people alive — have to deal with body shamers too.

The star of Wonder Woman, for one, has had to fight back against misogyny and trolling related to her body. As Gal Gadot explained to Rolling Stone, she’s gotten complaints that her body doesn’t have the pinup proportions of the original — which, friendly reminder, is a comic book character, so it’s literally impossible for anyone to measure up. She said an interview with the magazine for its recent cover story, “I told them, ‘Listen, if you want to be for real, then the Amazons, they had only one boob. Exactly one boob. So what are you talking about here? Me having small boobs and small ass? That will make all the difference.’”

Gadot’s not the first — and certainly won’t be the last — glamazon to get blasted. Below, a few more:

Jennifer Aniston

Body-shaming rumors got so bad for Jennifer Aniston that she had to pen an essay disavowing the pregnancy rumors that have followed her for most of her career. “The objectification and scrutiny we put women through is absurd and disturbing. The way I am portrayed by the media is simply a reflection of how we see and portray women in general, measured against some warped standard of beauty,” she wrote. Even with her scorched-earth takedown, journalists have found new ways to ask Aniston about her body by inviting her to share her feelings on the persistent rumors. Here’s a solution: Ask this accomplished actress about her work.

Halle Berry

When Halle Berry walked the red carpet with her hands on her belly at this summer’s Chrysalis Butterfly Ball, tabloids fell over themselves to speculate that she was expecting. Her rep had to confirm to People that she wasn’t pregnant, all due to a bit of belly and a hand position. Berry found her own way to address the rumors on Instagram. “Can a girl have some steak and fries?” she wrote.

Rihanna

Even Queen Rih has dealt with discussion over her body weight. Rihanna, just like the rest of us, values her snacks. She laughed off a comment on Instagram, writing, “Somebody called me too fat?” This year, she got cheers from fans for “that thick Rihanna,” and dozens of articles speculated about a potential pregnancy or indulgences that led to a few extra pounds.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga dove into the Super Bowl covered in gemstones, but the next day, among the praise she also heard about the “pot belly” that haters thought was visible in her skintight leotard. She weighed in immediately. “I heard my body is a topic of conversation, so I wanted to say, I’m proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too,” she said at the time. “No matter who you are or what you do.” Supporters descended on her photo to thank her for her encouraging words.

Hilary Duff

When you’ve grown up in the spotlight, you’ve learned exactly how to deal with critics. Hilary Duff posted a photo earlier this month showing off her “celeb flaws” on Instagram. “I am posting this on behalf of young girls, women, and mothers of all ages,” she wrote. “Ladies, let’s be proud of what we’ve got and stop wasting precious time in the day wishing we were different, better, and unflawed. You guys (you know who you are!) already know how to ruin a good time, and now you are body shamers as well.” The hashtag? #kissmyass.

Let’s hope these accomplished, intelligent (oh, and gorgeous) women can serve as role models for anyone out there dealing with the body-hating bullies. Next time you get a nasty comment on Instagram, just channel Wonder Woman. Or Rihanna.

She is planning a huge party in a few weeks, which she’s saying is for her birthday, but my guess is that’s when she’ll tell everyone she’s engaged," a source dished to In Touch. If they're really engaged, there's good reason she's not shouting it from the rooftops, too. "Ninety-nine percent of Khloé’s friends and family are against it. [Khloe] is determined to have this wedding no matter what. [Kim] might not even attend. She hasn’t forgiven him for cheating on Khloé while she was pregnant, and Kim knows he’ll do it again. FG to disburse $322m Abacha loot to poor Nigerians

The Federal Government is reportedly making plans to disburse $322 million fund repatriated from the accounts of former Head of State, late General Sani Abacha in Switzerland to Nigerians.

DailyTrust reports that the National Coordinator of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), Nigeria and Special Assistant to the President on Justice Reforms, Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu disclosed this recently in an interactive session with newsmen.

Ibekeaku-Nwagwu said under a MoU with Switzerland, the funds would be paid directly into the accounts of the poorest Nigerians through their various accounts for two years and identification numbers to be made available on the website being developed by the National Social Investment office and the World Bank. She pleaded with Nigerians to be patient as the agency is working on the modalities and would brief the public on June 28th. Ibeakwu-Nwagwu added that the process for the payment will be transparent for civil society and the media to monitor.
She said despite oppositions against the MoU from within and outside government, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN) and his team have pursued President Muhammadu Buhari’s agenda of ensuring that the $322m was returned for deployment in the social safety nets project, which would make targeted transfers to the poor and vulnerable households.

“The poorest members of the community will be registered online, and before you make any payment, they must have an ID number so that every payment would be tracked. No amount will be paid out without a joint signature between Nigeria and the World Bank and without identification of individuals,” she said.

Ibekeaku-Nwagwu said President Buhari’s commitment to the Open Government Partnership during the London Summit in 2016 has enhanced transparency and accountability in government budgeting and contracting, adding that “If there is anything we have achieved its about getting Nigerian citizens to become conscious about what is happening with their money.”

Taken seven years apart, these official photographs suggest that Harry and Meghan's wedding may have been a more informal affair than the groom's older brother's.
Bridesmaids and page boys are seen sitting on the floor at Windsor Castle as key players in the celebration pose for official photos.
It is a far cry from the more rigid pictures taken after Prince William's marriage to Kate Middleton back in 2011.
In the older prince's official pictures, the happy couple stand in the middle as their nearest and dearest line up in rows.
The Queen and Prince Philip sit in both images.

In the pictures taken at Harry and Meghan's wedding, the groom stands one pace behind the bride, whereas William and Kate stand shoulder-to-shoulder in their picture.
Going back further, the snap below was taken after Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding in 1981.

Just two bridesmaids sit on the floor, while the rest are standing in the image.
The most recent picture was taken in the Green Room at Windsor Castle just an hour after the ceremony, which was watched by millions around the world.
Harry and Meghan chose fashion photographer Alexi Lubomirski to take these official photos of their big day.
In a second image, Harry and Meghan are pictured with members of the royal family, including the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The stunning images showed off Meghan's Givenchy bridal gown to perfection - designed by Clare Waight Keller, the first female Artistic Director at the historic French fashion house.
The British-born designer said: "It is truly an honour to have been given the opportunity to collaborate with Meghan Markle on such a remarkable occasion."

Justin Bieber is taking his whole religious thing to the next level, because after spin class this morning, he spotted some homeless people sleeping on the street and flopped down for a heart-to-heart. It didn't go quite as well as he expected, though!

He spent several minutes talking to one of them after he brought them water, and seemed genuinely interested in the conversation. Then the other one woke up, and proceeded to yell and curse at The Biebs before telling him to get lost! He seemed caught off guard and quickly got up to make his exit, and the whole encounter got awkward quickly.

The "Sorry" crooner has made so many positive changes in his life over the past few years, and it appears his compassion is growing right alongside his faith. He goes to church services almost daily, and it seems they've really given him some perspective on the important things in this world. What other superstar do you know of that would go out of their way to help the less fortunate?

We guess not everyone has Bieber fever, but we do!

The couple - who are rumored to be engaged and have been together since the spring of 2015 - looked relaxed and happy as they doted on their little one after finding a patch of sand to sit on.

Spotted at Sunset Beach just south of Los Angeles, it's the first time in months the family-of-three have been seen out together.

Words like "alien" and "robot" have been used to describe her face in the campaign shots, and you just KNOW she's devastated over the reactions.

Kimmy K probably doesn't have time to obsess over this, though, as she's now a mother-of-three after welcoming daughter Chicago West via surrogate last week.

“Kim is just so thrilled that her dream of having three kids finally came true. She’s really enjoying these few days just being with the baby and her family and soaking it all in. She was a little nervous about how Saint and North would react but so far everything is great," a source dished to People.

Although, she did just admit to a Twitter follower that she's "self obsessed," so who knows how she'll react to this latest criticism!
